Reissue. Features the latest remastering. Includes a Japanese description, lyrics. Features original cover artwork. A tightly swinging set of tracks dedicated to Al Jazzbo Collins – the famous jazz DJ of the 50s! Collins has little to do with the set – save for his image on the front cover – and the group's mostly a swing-based ensemble, grooving in a style that's similar to other mid 50s albums on Bethlehem, but a bit rougher and more open-ended. The ensemble seems to be led by tenor player Bob Wilber – and features Sonny Truitt on trombone, John Glasel on trumpet, Bob Hammer on piano, Bill Britto on bass, and Jackie Moffitt on drums. Titles include a number of originals – including "Giggles", "Phweedah", "View From Jazzbo's Head", and "The Troglodyte".

Annie Clark began recording St. Vincent almost immediately after she finished touring in support of Love This Giant, her inspired collaboration with David Byrne. It's not hard to hear the influence that album had on these songs: Love This Giant's literal and figurative brassiness gave Clark's witty yet thoughtful approach more sass without sacrificing any of her intelligence. Similarly, while St. Vincent is some of her most pop-oriented work, it doesn't dilute the essence of her music. If anything, her razor-sharp wit is even more potent when polished in a candy coating with just a hint of venom.

Features 24-bit digital remastering. Comes with a mini-description. A solid effort that has been dismissed based upon its associations with two Cobham lemons, Simplicity of Expression: Depth of Thought and B.C., all recorded around the same time. This recording finds Cobham continuing to explore the funk genre; however, the overall mood here is quite darker and more introspective, similar to Crosswinds.

Reissue with DSD remastering. A pretty sweet 70s set from Art Farmer – ostensibly a tribute to Duke Ellington, but really more of a gently soulful session in the mode of Art's best work of the decade! The group is the Cedar Walton trio with Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all matching Art's lyrical work beautifully, in a soulfully swinging way that transforms familiar Ellington numbers into new vehicles for creative expression. Farmer's at the height of his powers, and tracks include "Love You Madly", "Lush Life", "In A Sentimental Mood", and "The Star Crossed Lovers".

With 68 tracks, most of which I thoroughly enjoy listening to, I had to buy this album as soon as I looked to see what new releases were in the shops. It was a particularly good day for me as I also bought three other new releases, so I've got a busy period of reviewing this week.

Many of these tracks will be familiar to fans of 70s pop music, and not just in Britain where this compilation was released. Mainstream pop, rock, soul and disco music inevitably dominate, reflecting the tastes of record buyers at the time. I only started collecting records in 1977, but I listened to a lot of pop radio before then so I became very familiar with these songs. Along the way I had forgotten some, but in most cases I'm pleased to be reminded of them. Even so, my favourites tend to be among the tracks I've bought on albums or compilations by the individual artists, which is well over half of them. I like compilations of this type because the give me a different listening experience, plus there's always the chance that I remember I must buy a collection by an artist who I hadn't got round to buying but meant to. It's too early to say whether this particular compilation will prompt me in that way, but it's happened plenty of times before.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Grammy Award winner BILLY PAUL began singing at the age of 12 and sometimes performed on local radio shows. Drawing inspiration from his family's collection of 78's, Paul would incorporate Jazz, R&B and Pop into his style, resulting in a unique sound that became synonymous with Philadelphia International Records throughout the 1970's. Billy became well known on his local circuit, singing in clubs and later around college campuses all over the country, which later led to him performing live with some of the biggest names in black music of the 60's and 70's including Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, Nina Simone and Roberta Flack to name a few.

Drummer Otis Brown III is a well-known, in-demand sideman and the founding drummer in Joe Lovano's Us Five. The Thought of You, his debut as a leader, was co-produced with Derrick Hodge. Pianist Robert Glasper, saxophonist John Ellis, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, and bassist Ben Williams -- the only one of these men who was not Brown's classmate at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music -- are the core of this lineup. Bilal Oliver (another schoolmate), Gretchen Parlato, and Nikki Ross all make vocal appearances. Hodge and Brown obviously share a love for the classic Blue Note quartet and quintet sounds of the late '50s through the middle '60s: tight, crisp, clean.

Reissue. Comes with new liner notes. This was the first real indication to the world that Keith Jarrett was an ambitious, multi-talented threat to be reckoned with, an explosion of polystylistic music that sprawled over two LPs (now squeezed onto a single CD). Using his classic quartet (Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian) as a base, Jarrett occasionally adds the biting rock-edged electric guitar of Sam Brown and always-intriguing percussionist Airto Moreira, and indulges in some pleasant string and brass arrangements of his own, along with some grinding organ smears and acceptable soprano sax.

The organ music of Louis Couperin, an uncle of François, clearly pointed toward the French High Baroque style and has received a good number of recordings, but his harpsichord music is less fortunate. This is largely because they're imperfectly understood, at both the macro and micro levels. This release by celebrated French keyboardist Christophe Rousset contains half a dozen works designated as suites, but those are entirely his own creation. They exist only in manuscript, grouped mostly by dance rhythm; there are some ground bass pieces and some preludes without bar lines in a separate group.

"Psychomagia" is the new album by the fabulous quartet of Abraxas, the acclaimed tribal rock arrangements for the Book of Angels series. Here they perform a complex new suite of music written expressly for them by Downtown alchemist John Zorn. Drawing inspiration from the magical writings of Giordano Bruno and Alejandro Jodorowski and others, Zorn has written a bold collection of compositions that challenge the musicians to the breaking point. With a program ranging from some of the most intense ritualistic sounds you are likely to hear to tender minimalistic odes, this is a surprising new volume in Zorn’s mystic series that matches the intensity and power of Moonchild, PainKiller and Naked City. Recorded at Orange Music and mixed by Bill Laswell. Essential.

Orrin Keepnews' commentary (from the new liner notes): “This album was actually one of the major factors in the successful battle to win new and wider acceptance for Monk. In the sequence of his Riverside discography, it followed two initial albums devoted entirely to 'standards' and offered the first occasion on this label for Thelonious to express himself basically through his own writing. Creating music for five instrumental voices in terms of his personal and unorthodox construction, approach and phrasing, he produced some startlingly brilliant examples of the great depth, wit, and strength of his style.”

An entirely worthy Bobby Hutcherson LP that went unissued until 1980, Patterns finds the vibist working in typically challenging territory; what makes this session distinctive is that it features some of drummer and favorite Hutcherson composer Joe Chambers' most structured work, though that hardly means it's traditional or unadventurous. Four of the six pieces are Chambers'; the others are by altoist/flautist James Spaulding (the pensive Martin Luther King tribute "A Time to Go") and pianist Stanley Cowell (the warmly melodic waltz "Effi," dedicated to his wife).

Official Release #54. Most of You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 3 is devoted the 1984 band which, at the time of this set's release, had not been properly documented (the live Does Humor Belong in Music? was made commercially available in the U.S. in 1995 only). Most of the material comes from late-'70s/early-'80s albums like Sheik Yerbouti, Joe's Garage, and You Are What You Is. Disc one is 1984 only (excerpt for a few edits in "Drowning Witch") and lacks interest.

When they recorded the follow-up to their surprisingly successful debut, the members of Visage appeared to be dealing from a position of strength. But the dance club-fueled, style-obsessed new romantic movement that had propelled the group to success in England was already crumbling, and frontman Steve Strange had begun to take his role as the movement's figurehead a little too seriously. The Anvil, rumored to be the subject of a multi-million dollar feature film (a project that never materialized), emphasizes Strange's penchant for melancholy and melodrama.

Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, sharp-edged frontlines, and some great solo work by players who include Benny Bailey, Derek Humble, Jimmy Woode, Shahib Shihab, Idrees Sulieman, and Fats Sadi – coming together in a brilliant trans-Atlantic meeting of jazz talents! Tracks include "Long Note Blues", "Speedy Reeds", "Sonor", and "Om Mani Padme Hum".

On Remember Shakti, jazz guitarist John McLaughlin returns to one of his chief inspirations -- classical Indian music -- by re-forming his '70s group Shakti. Original members Zakir Hussain (tabla) and Vikku Vinayakram (ghatam) return, joined by Hariprasad Chaurasia on the bansuri (Indian flute). Remember Shakti has a more meditative, fluid feel than the percussive work of the original group, but McLaughlin's subtle, hypnotic guitar work bridges Shakti's past and present. Remember Shakti's double-disc length gives the group ample time to explore the intricacies of compositions like "The Wish," "Chandrakauns," and the hour-plus "Mukti." An emotionally rich, musically accomplished album, Remember Shakti reunites a unique group of players.

After Man-Child, alas, Herbie Hancock's American jazz-funk records in the 1970s grew gradually more commercial, less stimulating, and crucially, less truly funky with each release, even as his equipment rack grew larger. Just take a look at the staggering collection of keyboards on the back cover of the Sunlight LP -- all sought-after collectors' items now -- yet Hancock makes so little use of their possibilities here. For much of the album, he seems most interested in establishing a new career as an electronic vocalist.

Picking up right where Roscoe and company left off is Conversations II. Culled from the same 2 days in the studio as Conversations I, the music is in the same vein, exploratory. The main difference between this second record and the first, is a more mellow tone throughout. The musicians appear to become more and more comfortable on the collection of songs. Now its hard to determine without better documentation of the recording set order, but Conversations II feels more cohesive, where Conversations I felt more like a “let’s get to know each other” collection.

hristophe Rousset's first recording for Aparte, devoted to Louis Couperin, was received enthusiastically by public and critics alike and collected many distinctions in the international press, including a BBC Music Magazine Instrumental Choice. Since then he has continued to delight and excel both as harpsichordist and as director of Les Talens Lyriques. Now at the peak of his maturity, the artist presents Bach' musical testament: the Well-Tempered Clavier. Written 20 years after the first volume, Book II contains the musical and spiritual legacy of the composer. Christophe Rousset plays these pieces on the 1628 Ruckers harpsichord of Antwerp, one of the best examples of its kind in the world.

The late Larry Young was an organist whose fairly brief career had lots of highs and very few middles or lows. Take this session from 1973 -- his first non-Blue Note date as a leader and post-Lifetime -- as a for instance. It is startling for its fresh look at how the organ is used in jazz and in improvisation, period. On Lawrence of Newark, Young enlisted a host of younger New York session cats who were hanging around the fringes of the funk and avant-garde scenes -- James Blood Ulmer, trumpeter Charles MacGee, Cedric Lawson, and about a dozen others all jumped into Young's dark and freaky musical stew.

With apologies to Spandau Ballet, Ultravox, and even Duran Duran, this is the music that best represents the short-lived but always underrated new romantic movement. That's fitting, because Visage's frontman, Steve Strange, was the colorfully painted face of the movement, just as this album was its sound. Warming up Kraftwerk's icy Teutonic electronics with a Bowie-esque flair for fashion, Strange and the new romantics created a clubland oasis far removed from the drabness of England's early-'80s reality -- and the brutality of the punk response to it. And no one conjured up that Eurodisco fantasyland better than Visage, whose "Fade to Grey" became the anthem of the outlandishly decked-out Blitz Kids congregated at Strange's club nights.

2014 Official Release, only available as an Import. The final concert was recorded in Dortmund, Germany on December 21, 1986. Available in very limited quantities. Features the last performance of Jaco Pastorius. Japanese original release. This live album, recorded in Dortmund, Germany, Dec 12, 1986, is Jaco's memorable last performance in his life. Jaco at the time was vibrant, good in health, and played well. The recording plan as The Holy Ghost, power trio with a gutarist and a drummer, was in progress with MCA Records at the same time. Jaco stated "Although I have played in many form of bands like Wheather Report, Word of Mough Big band, sextet, I am now having fun with trio. I expect I can create new sound with lots more space."

After years of requests for a live album, Eilen presents Live at the Narrows - a double album of songs recorded in Fall River, MA in February, 2014. The set list includes many of Eilen's originals as well as select covers and a new song titled Rio Grande. The past year has been one of reflection and incredible output for Eilen. The singer-songwriter gave birth to a beautiful girl named Mavis (after gospel great Mavis Staples). Jewell squeezed in a few tours in 2014 and somehow found time to honor a frequent request from fans to release a live album. The two disc set, titled Live at the Narrows, includes original songs and some of her favorite covers. This special self-release was recorded over two evenings in early 2014 and features artwork hand drawn by her bass player Johnny Sciascia.

Zion80 is the brainchild of guitarist Jon Madof, a wildly popular project that seamlessly blends the Afro-pop stylings of the legendary Fela Kuti with the Jewish tradition. Featuring an exciting 11-piece all-star band, Madof masterfully blends horns, guitars, keyboards and percussion, mixing the polyrhythmic intensity of Afrobeat with the freewheeling madness of the Downtown scene. A one of a kind ascent into the unknown, Madof’s creative arrangements of 8 tunes from Zorn’s “Book of Angels”are spiritual and endlessly exciting.

As modern progressive rock’s undisputed figurehead and chief workaholic, Steven Wilson has little to prove, and yet his fourth solo album is anything but a cosy reassertion of values. In contrast to his much-lauded Victorian ghost-stories set The Raven that Refused to Sing from 2013, Hand. Cannot. Erase. is an album rooted in sonic and spiritual modernity, largely eschewing early prog tropes in favour of an inventive blend of bleak and brooding industrial soundscapes and rugged, muscular ensemble performances from Wilson’s virtuoso henchmen.

The collaborations between Sonny Rollins and any given trumpet player were few and far between, but they did include such notables as Miles Davis, Don Cherry, Clifford Brown, and in this case, his first tandem partnership with Kenny Dorham. At the time, both of them were also members of the Max Roach Quintet, and thus quite familiar with each other's strengths. Add to the mix drummer Art Blakey, bassist Percy Heath, and emerging modern jazz pianist Elmo Hope, and this shapes up to be one of the more potent combos of 1954.

One of our favorite Bobby Hutcherson albums ever – and a magical session filled with electric Latin vibes! The album's quite a different one for Bobby at the time – as it has him working with some larger arrangements, in a soulful west coast groove that's almost got the feel of a hip 70s soundtrack. Bobby's vibes are nicely set up against Fender Rhodes on most tracks – and the group's got some added Latin percussion that really opens up the rhythms. The whole thing's totally wonderful – brimming over with sun and soul, the kind of magic record that will never be made again! Tracks include "Camel Rise", "Yuyo", "Montara", "La Malanga", "Little Angel", and "Love Song".

Preserving newly written Bob Dylan songs for copyright is the reason why the Band's Garth Hudson rolled tape at Big Pink but The Basement Tapes were something much more than songwriting demos. Greil Marcus dubbed it a celebration of the "Old, Weird America" in his 1997 book Invisible Republic, connecting these songs to Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, adding an extra layer of myth to tapes that were shrouded in mystery from the moment bootlegs started to circulate. The Basement Tapes Complete strengthens portions of that legend while simultaneously puncturing it. Certainly, the six-disc box -- its first five discs assembled according to Hudson's numbering system, with the sixth disc collecting sessions discovered later -- feels substantially different from the LP released in 1975, where the overall picture was distorted by Robbie Robertson adding sometimes significant overdubs and including Band recordings that weren't cut during those seven months in 1967.

This album was spawned by three coinciding events -- the need to acknowledge the death of band co-founder Brian Jones (whose epitaph graces the inside cover) in July of 1969; the need to get "Honky Tonk Women," then a huge hit single, onto an LP; and to fill the ten-month gap since the release of Beggars Banquet and get an album with built-in appeal into stores ahead of the Stones' first American tour in three years. The fact that the Stones had amassed a sufficient number of hits since their last greatest-hits compilation in early 1966 (Big Hits: High Tide and Green Grass) made this a no-brainer, and its song lineup was as potent at the time as any compilation of hit singles by any artist.

Many great musicians experience peaks and valleys throughout their careers. Legendary guitarist John McLaughlin, however, always seems to be perched firmly at the top of his game. Whether with former Mahavishnu bandmates, trios with Paco DeLucia and Al Dimeola, or with contemporary jazz/fusion monsters like Kai Eckhardt and Trilok Gurtu , McLaughlin continues to remain the master of all he surveys. With THE HEART OF THINGS, the guitarist once again unleashes his dynamic sense of color and texture, as well as those unbelievable chops.

Brian Eno will soon issue expanded versions of four of his albums originally released in the 1990s: Nerve Net (1992), The Shutov Assembly (1992), Neroli (1993) and The Drop (1997) will each be reissued as a two-CD deluxe editions containing the original album and an additional disc of unreleased and rare Eno work specific to each record. Each album comes in deluxe casebound packaging and is accompanied by a 16-page booklet compiling photos, images and writing by Eno that is relevant to each release. Reissue of Brian Eno’s critically acclaimed 1993 single-track album. Named after the precious sensual oil derived from the flowers of the Seville orange, Neroli is more than any other Eno work intrinsically linked with the idea of perfume and fragrance. The piece is formed from a single Phrygian mode melody which Eno constructs and deconstructs throughout the work with the subtle flair that has become his trademark.

Willie Nelson delivers his first new album, Heroes, as part of his homecoming to Legacy Recordings. No themes or gimmicks to this album, just 13 brand new recordings produced by Buddy Cannon (Academy of Country Music' producer of the year 2006). Scheduled for release on May 15th 2012 , just in time for Willie's 79th birthday, the songs take on a reflective, emotional tone and move from heartfelt (a stunning rendition of Pearl Jam's "Just Breathe") to humor (on "Roll Me Up" with guest vocalist Snoop Dogg). Other guest vocalists on the album include Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Jamey Johnston, Billy Joe Shaver and Sheryl Crow. Sons Lukas and Micah Nelson also feature prominently, making this a real family affair. This beautiful album, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, should have broad appeal among Nelson's core fans and followers and beyond.

Reissue. Comes with new liner notes. 2014 remaster. Available only for a limited period of time until March 20, 2015. Available as CD for the first time in the world. Overlooked solo work from John Lewis – a lesser-known, Japanese-only session that features the pianist in a relaxed trio setting! The mode here is as spacious as some of Lewis' more contemplative records – still very much wrapped up in that careful sense of tone and timing – but the overall feel is maybe more personal and spontaneous, as John takes the lead in the company of Connie Kay on drums and Michael Moore on bass. There's a nicely mature feel to the music – but mature in a way that gets past some of Lewis' too-serious modes of a decade or two previous – and titles include "Lela", "Sacha's March", "Visitor From Mars", "Natural Affection", and "Monday In Milan".

It's hard to know what to make of the Russian Soul title of this release by Poland's young Apollon Musagète Quartet. Is the program, with only Shostakovich from the truly nationalist side of the Russian compositional roster, supposed to represent "the Russian soul?" Or just a Russian brand of soul? In any event, only the Shostakovich String Quartet No. 4 in D major, Op. 83, fits the general stereotype of the inward, melancholy, perhaps self-destructive Russian soul. Tchaikovsky's popular String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 11, of 1871, is both the first true efflorescence of the composer's proto-neo-classic Mozartian side and nearly the first evidence of his ability to write a real heartbreaker of a good tune, in the slow movement (track 2).

SILVER CONVENTION started life in Munich in 1974 as Silver Bird Convention when German songwriting and producing partners Michael Kunzte and Sylvester Levay released the single ‘Save Me’ on Jupiter Records, enlisting three session singers to take care of the minimal vocal refrain on the track. With the "Bird” soon dropped from the acts name ‘Save Me’ became an international Disco hit charting at #30 in the U.K. and across the board in the U.S. at #10 Disco and #103 Pop, heralding the start of continued success throughout the 70's. With a settled line up of Ramona Wolf, Penny McLean and Linda G. Thompson as Silver Convention the group released this, their eponymously titled debut LP (titled "Save Me” outside of Germany) to great acclaim as the Euro-Disco sound made waves across the world with Giorgio Morodor, also based in Munich, surfing the highest.

Official Release #63. This is Zappa's masterpiece of electronic music, conceived, composed and performed on his Synclavier, a computer system for music composition and recording. Civilization Phaze III is an astounding work, taking Zappa nearly ten years to finish. Released posthumously, this 2 CD set is a testimony to Zappa the composer, containing the pure fruits of his imagination and the hard work he continued until his death in 1993. Continuing the story of the piano people from Lumpy Gravy (and utilizing much of the same tape source material for it's interludes) the album fulfills on the promise of his Grammy-winning Jazz From Hell, the first album released of his Synclavier music.

An internationally recognized child prodigy by the age of 6, Hungarian drummer/percussionist Tommy Vig grew to become one of the premier European jazz players. In the late 1950's he migrated to New York and became a much in demand percussionist, over the years performing with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Tony Curtis, the Miles Davis-Gil Evans big band, Woody Allen, Diana Ross, and The Carpenters, to name a few. Vig is also the percussionist on all the Rod Stewart albums. A collection of never-before-heard studio outtakes, live recordings, and other rarities, The Pearl Sessions documents the legacy of Janis Joplin's masterpiece album. In 1971, the posthumous release of Pearl topped the charts, yielding the hit single "Me and Bobby McGee" and going on to sell nearly 8 million copies. For the first time in one package, the original mono versions of the album's 45s can be heard alongside the original LP tracks, as well as intriguing newlydiscovered alternate versions, outtakes and vocal takes of Pearl classics. With this exciting discovery of previously uncatalogued tapes, listeners can hear Janis in the studio, joking with producer Paul Rothchild (the Doors) and Full Tilt Boogie band mates, and working through what would become some of her best known songs. Joplin's way-too-short life is memorialized perfectly with this upbeat expression of joy she found in the studio: her singular, impassioned vocals, boundless energy, and the greatest music of her career.

At 15 years old, Seether are starting to slide into middle age and, appropriately, their music is beginning to mature on Isolate and Medicate, their sixth studio album. Once again working with Brendan O'Brien, the grunge-era superstar who helmed Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray, Seether gravitate toward the melodic, a shift apparent in both the verses and the riffs, although there's still a tendency to grind out thick neo-grunge guitar workouts both slow ("My Disaster") and fast ("Suffer It All"). These bursts of heaviosity are the exceptions to the rule, though, for much of Isolate and Medicate finds Seether uncannily re-creating the sound and style of Nickelback, to the point where "Nobody Praying for Me" seems to follow the cadences of "How You Remind Me."

In 2014 we celebrate Jean-Philippe Rameau s 250th anniversary. To highlight his wonderful compositions, this disc also presents works by 20th-century musical pioneer Ligeti. Rameau and Ligeti have a similar approach to generating music, and their short pieces are of similar drama and effect. Krier steers her own path between sentimental and spiky, with a bright, forthright tone. “Does it make sense to combine the music of a French Baroque master with avant-garde works written in the 1950‘s? Can one place these two composers – Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) and György Ligeti (1923-2006) – side by side? Do they have anything in common, and, if so, how can such traits be viewed from the vantage points of two entirely different centuries?

Reissue with DSD remastering. A strong 70s recording by a group that was mostly known as the Cedar Walton trio – the group of Sam Jones on bass, Walton on piano, and Billy Higgins on drums – recorded only for the Japanese market, and a heck of a record! The set's got one standout feature that sets it apart from some of the other sides by the Walton group at the time – the use of a string quartet on a few of the tracks, which creates some great interplay between the core trio and the augmented strings.
