John Zorn, Wayne Horvitz, Elliott Sharp, Bobby Previte - Downtown Lullaby (1998) {Depth Of Field DOF2}
By the time this was recorded, in 1998, the participants were virtual éminence grises of the downtown New York City scene, but this was the first occasion for the four of them to play together as a quartet (although all but Zorn had been members of Horvitz's band the President). The pieces derive their titles from the addresses of erstwhile performing spaces largely in the East Village and Soho, most of which had their heydays in the loft jazz explosion of the late '70s. All of the cuts are improvised by the group, and the perhaps surprising aspect is how much of the vibe is closer to late Miles Davis than to the free improv aesthetic practiced in the titles' points of reference.

John Zorn - There Is No More Firmament (2017) {Tzadik TZ8352}
There is No More Firmament is a remarkable collection of recent compositions from 2013–2016 that showcase the range, variety and continued creativity of Zorn as he enters his sixties. Connected together with a thread of intensity, magic and madness, the music tells a twisted and complex story of a magical descent into madness. The compositions include two works for brass ensembles, a woodwind quintet, jazz piano trio, string trio and two solo pieces for clarinet and trumpet, with the outrageous trumpet solo Merlin appearing in two realizations—one by jazz master Peter Evans and another by the European classical virtuoso Marco Blaauw.

| Naked City: The
Complete Studio Recordings is a five disc box set that contains all of
the studio albums released by Naked City during their five-year history.
Probably Zorn's most popular and most controversial musical project,
the music of Naked City has been debated, analyzed, adored and reviled
by fans, critics and academics alike, but nothing can replace the
experience of hearing it in all its frightening glory. Most people know
this music from the single domestic release on Nonesuch, but the major
portion of their studio recordings were issued from 1989 - 1993 on the
hard to find Japanese labels Avant and Toy's Factory. |

| In the late
’70s and early ’80s Zorn presented yearly retrospectives of his game
pieces at various Downtown venues. He called these events his Olympiads.
This long awaited CD presents three of his classic pre-Cobra game
pieces in multiple versions by the fabulous Brooklyn-based guitar
quartet Dither. Here you will find the building blocks of Zorn’s
trademark musical language—virtuosic extended techniques, surprising
contrasts, fast group interaction and razor sharp changes. Featuring the
first recording of Zorn’s legendary compositions Fencing and Curling,
these fabulous realizations will keep you on the edge of your seat from

| Focusing on the
brilliant cellist Jay Campbell, soon to be a new music superstar, along
with the equally masterful Michael Nicolas, Chris Otto and Stephen
Gosling, these three powerful compositions take chamber music to a whole
new level of intensity. Three realizations of Zorn’s infamous
composition for two celli “Ouroboros” (two featuring guest percussionist
Tyshawn Sorey) along with his canonic puzzle “Occam’s Razor” and the
ten metaphysical ambiguities comprising the piano trio “The Aristos,”
this is chamber music as you have never heard it before— visceral,
intense and powerfully emotional. |

shockingly dramatic world of bizarre sonorities, spectral
experimentation, hypnotic moods and stirring melodies. From first

wildest, most creative, flamboyant and masterful readings of Masada
material since the Secret Chiefs 3. The work of a maestro in total
control of his craft, Amon takes Masada to unimagined places! Essential. |

| "Psychomagia"
is the new album by the fabulous quartet of Abraxas, the acclaimed
tribal rock arrangements for the Book of Angels series. Here they
perform a complex new suite of music written expressly for them by
Downtown alchemist John Zorn. Drawing inspiration from the magical
writings of Giordano Bruno and Alejandro Jodorowski and others, Zorn has
written a bold collection of compositions that challenge the musicians
to the breaking point. With a program ranging from some of the most
intense ritualistic sounds you are likely to hear to tender minimalistic
odes, this is a surprising new volume in Zorn’s mystic series that
matches the intensity and power of Moonchild, PainKiller and Naked City.

| For their
fourth release, Zorn’s most intimate and spiritual 21st century ensemble
returns with a melodic and open book of tunes reminiscent of the Book
of Angels. Drawing inspiration from the Biblical Song of Solomon and
originally intended as a companion piece to Zorn’s vocal masterpiece
Shir Hashirim, the music is regal, sensual and romantic—a magical blend
of classical, jazz and folk music. There has never been a group like the
Gnostic Trio, and The Testament of Solomon is a unique CD in their
catalog, filled with strong solos, telepathic interplay and a charming

| Featuring the same magical Templar quartet from “In Sacred Blood”, “The Last Judgment” is the final CD in the remarkable Moonchild septology. This project has explored many different worlds in the past 8 years, and this CD takes a moody and lyrical approach with Medeski’s organ fully integrated into the band. Once again inspired by the legend of the powerful Knights Templar and their tragic demise under accusations of heresy in 1307, Zorn has composed a suite of pieces with a strong sense of continuity and emotional impact. Mike Patton draws on every vocal technique in his huge arsenal and the rhythm section of Dunn and Baron are tighter than ever. The last piece of the Moonchild puzzle—essential! |

finally available and it is one of their tightest and most imaginative

Returning to the fold like three prodigal sons, they have created twelve
exhilarating arrangements that alternately groove, loop, shred and burn
with a fiery passion. |
